SunniPath Blog – » Islam & the Language of the Arabs
This Sunday, SunniPath will be hosting its first CourseLens for the Fall 2007 semester, Islam & the Language of the Arabs with Shaykh Hamza Karamali at 12pm GMT.
“The All-Merciful taught the Qur’an, created man, and
taught him speech” (55:1-4). Language is closely linked to
religion, as it is the means by which knowledge is conveyed. For
Muslims, Arabic holds a high place because it is the language of the
Qur’an and Hadith literature, and also the language in which
scholars of different ethnic backgrounds communicated with each other.
In Islam & the Language of the Arabs, Shaykh Hamza will
explore the relationship between language and the mind, and how
effective and eloquent language stems from clear and insightful
thought. Due to a general decline in the language capability of people
in the present day, whether English, Arabic, or otherwise, our ability
to appreciate the linguistic miracle of the Quran has been marred. How
do we get over this difficulty in learning language to learn Arabic
properly and thus appreciate the Qur’an more fully? Islam & the Language of the Arabs explores themes from both the upcoming Peak of Eloquence short course and SunniPath’s entire Arabic program.

[Faraz notes: Shaykh Hamza Karamali is one of the few true geniuses--and one of the most remarkable humans--I know. Someone whose knowledge, understanding, presence, and state one should not miss out on benefiting from.]

Witr Behind A Shafi’i
SunniPath Answers (http://qa.sunnipath.com)
I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.
I
consulted a number of leading Hanafi scholars, including Mufti Rafi
Usmani (Grand Mufti of Pakistan), about this. Their response was that
it is permitted for Hanafis to pray witr behind Shafiis even if they
pray it differently from the Hanafi three rakats–such as two-plus-one.
This is based on a followable position within the Hanafi school that
what matters is the imam’s prayer regarding the validity of his prayer.
And Allah alone gives success.

CrescentWatch Announcement: Ramadan Begins Friday
CrescentWatch.Org did not receive any reliably confirmed reports of the new crescent moon being sighted in North America on Wednesday evening.
We will complete the 30 days of Shaban and begin Ramadan Thursday evening with the
first day of the fast on Friday.
We are aware of the sighting reports in Chicago and New York and upon investigation, and consideration that no sightings occurred anywhere to the West or South, found them not reliable enough to establish the certainty required to begin this blessed month.
CrescentWatch.Org adheres to the traditional principal that Islamic lunar months begin and end based on the confirmed, verifiable sighting of the new crescent moon. Click here for Zaytuna Institute’s Statement Concerning the Beginning of Ramadan.
HilalBase:
Insha Allah, Ramadan will begin on Friday, the 14th!
Due to lack of any reliable sighting, first Ramadan will be on Friday, with first taraweeh on Thursday.
Faraz Rabbani notes:
People have been asking about “When do I begin?” I know of nothing more reliable than Zaytuna’s CrescentWatch initiative and the HilalBase project chaired by Imam Tahir Anwar. And Allah knows best.
Don’t Moonfight. Turn to your Lord in worship, submission, thankfulness, and love. Serve His creation, and uphold the truth in your life, in every way. Bring the light of the Prophetic example into your life. Remember the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should say the good or remain silent.”
God bless.
